The Unspoken Pain of Fertility Issues

The Unspoken Pain of Fertility Issues

Fertility issues were not part of the plan.  The pain and heartache, and the darkness of the unknown were not part of the plan.  However, this mess of fertility issues was one of the profound and beautiful journeys of my life.  It has shaped me as a woman, a wife, and now a mother.  I am stronger than I thought I could ever be and my bond and relationship with my husband is even deeper than I imagined.

Everyone who knows me, knows I don’t do well with uncertainty.  So let’s start at the beginning.  I graduated high school and headed off to college.  My focus was to get my degree before having a family.  I started dating my husband my last year in college.  After graduating and getting settled into my career, I decided it was time to go back to school to complete my master’s degree.  Soon after, my husband and I got married and after about a year of honeymoon bliss, we decided it was time to add to our family.  We both wanted children, so this was an exciting decision filled with so much hope!

Where’s our baby?

In the beginning, deciding to have a baby was so exciting and romantic.  However, after several months of trying, the obsession kicked in along with panic and a little fear and things became a lot less romantic.  I remember starting to track everything (diet, weight, exercise, temperature, how fertile I was during the month, etc., etc., etc.) regarding conception.  After about six months of trying to conceive with no success, my doctor started me on oral fertility drugs.  We had two failed cycles and I was devastated.  My doctor let us know that she could refer us to someone or we could continue along this path and keep trying.

The reality of no baby

I was so sad and hurt… I had always wanted to be a mother and my sweet husband wanted to be a father and now it seemed like it was never going to happen.  During this same time, my close friends and family were starting to have babies of their own.  I was literally in the throws of pregnancy announcements, baby showers, and births… my own personal hell.  Don’t get me wrong, I was so happy for my friends and family, but so desperate to experience these same things they did.

Taking Control

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

All right ladies and gentlemen… as much as I hate to say this, you can’t control your fertility issues.  You also can’t plan your fertility issues.  BUT, you can take charge of them and your life!

Here is what I learned on this journey:

  • It is okay to be sad, jealous, mad, worried, stressed, disappointed, etc.  Recognizing and accepting your feelings is key, but don’t let them consume you.  Remember, an invitation to a baby shower is not a personal attack on you… its actually the exact opposite.  Someone you love and care about wants to share their special moment with you… don’t miss those opportunities!

  • Communicate with your friends and family about your feelings about what is going on.  Sometimes those we are closest to don’t understand what we’re going through and you may want to consider finding a counselor to speak with.  This journey will be paved with lots of ups and downs and waiting… so to say it might make you a little emotional is an understatement.

  • Research your options.  Not all bodies are created equal and neither are fertility issues.  This is why it is so important to discuss these things with your doctor.  If you and your doctor don’t see eye-to-eye, then I suggest finding a new one.  I am so grateful for my relationship with my OB/GYN and my fertility doctors.  Their knowledge was top notch and their understanding and emotional support was amazing!

  • Control what’s in your control.  If there was ever a time to really zone in on your health… this would be it!  Watch what you eat, exercise, keep your stress under control, and follow any other recommendations your doctor gives you.

  • Enjoy your journey, because it will be the story you tell to your children.

I love my journey to motherhood and the story I get to share… it is amazing for so many reasons!  I hope you find the information in this post helpful, but most importantly, I hope you find comfort in knowing that you are not alone in this journey.  Don’t ever lose hope!

Cheers to your journey!

10 Ways to Reform Your Grocery Budget

10 Ways to Reform Your Grocery Budget

Good afternoon… I hope everyone is having a good one!  I recently discussed 15 Things to Evaluate Before Making a Budget on the blog (if you haven’t read it yet you should go check it out!) and it is the first step to take before beginning budgeting.  Today, I wanted to dive in even deeper in the budgeting world and discuss 10 Tips to Reform Your Grocery Budget.  I seriously hate spending money on food, but apparently you have to in order to survive.

Prior to starting this budgeting journey, we generally ran to the store and grabbed whatever we needed plus a ton of stuff we didn’t.  I don’t even want to talk about how much food we wasted, because we didn’t have a plan and would randomly shop and then forget it was in the fridge, thus letting it expire.  I never really saw this as an area that needed to be improved, until my husband brought it to my attention.

A few months ago, my husband randomly got our grocery store rewards and looked at the credit we received for shopping there the last three months.  He was shocked that we had spent over $1,400 per month on groceries given we are a family of four, two of which are toddlers and don’t eat that much.  This amount also does not include our household supplies (toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, etc.) nor our trips to get coffee or dining out.  I seriously almost had a heart attack when he said that number… there was no way that was correct!  So, we sat down together and went through our bank account and to my complete and horrid shock… he was correct.  I almost cried (partly because he was right and the other part for spending that much on food)!!!  Seriously though, if I’m going to blow the budget… I would rather blow it on something fun like a vacation or CRAFT SUPPLIES for blogging!!!!

Since that horrifying day, we have reformed our grocery budget to $550 a month and that includes our household supplies, coffee runs, and dining out.  That is a monthly savings of $850 to put towards something else!  How insane is that?!  I will admit when we first started this venture, I wasn’t sure if it was truly possible.  Then after the first successful week, I knew it was more than possible and I was hooked on the challenge of making sure it happened!!!  Please understand that I am not an extreme budgeter that uses tons of coupons, only shops generics, and eats mac n’ cheese every night.  I am a realist when it comes to budgeting and I am not willing to give up things I love just to save a penny.  However, I am willing to reduce purchasing things, meal plan, get organized, and cut corners here and there to save hard earned money.

So, if you are interested in tightening your grocery budget and figuring out how to spend less money while still enjoying life… keep reading!

  1. Set a Grocery Budget & Make a List

I know a lot of people suggest figuring out what you need to spend and setting that as your budget.  I disagree, I decided on how much I wanted to spend each week on groceries and then built my menu around that number.  Be sure to make a detailed list of what you need so you don’t forget anything while you are shopping.  If you forget something, then you waste extra time and money on additional trips to the store.

  1. Make a Menu & Check Your Pantry

If you are new to menu planning… KEEP IT SIMPLE until you get the hang of it!  I began by just planning dinners and then having a few things to eat for breakfasts, lunches, and snacks.  I planned one dinner without meat (because meat is expensive), I had one meal that was breakfast, and then one meal that was saved for dining out.  The rest of the week’s meals I tried to make sure they were easy and stuff I had made in the past.  I know this sounds boring, but I did this the first few weeks until I got better at menu planning.  Then I started evolving my menu, while keeping with my set budget.  Be sure to check your pantry and cupboards before you go grocery shopping.  Also try to stick to meals that have ingredients that you will regularly use.

  1. Set a budget for Dining Out and Coffee

Set the budget and stick to it!  No excuses!  I highly suggest using the cash system for these.  That way when the cash is gone, there is no more eating out or coffee runs until next week’s allowance.

  1. Buy in bulk

I have found that some items that our family regularly eats are cheaper if you buy them in bulk.  Make sure you have the area to store the extra and be sure to watch the experiation date… you want to make sure you consume it all before it expires.

  1. Sales, Store Rewards & Coupons

I have never been a sale shopper, but now that I have a budget I try to find items that are on sale.  If the budget allows, I may buy extra if it’s a good deal.  I am not a huge fan of coupons, however; I do suggest utilizing the coupons you get when you check out at a store.  Generally, those coupons are based on what you regularly shop for so you know you will use them.  I stick them into my wallet so I don’t lose them and can easily pull them out when I go to pay the next time I am at the store.  Remember… coupons are only beneficial if you are buying stuff you normally buy.  If you are using a coupon to buy something you normally wouldn’t buy… then you’re not saving any money.

  1. Brand vs. Generic

I will admit that with certain items I am not willing to buy generic because I can taste a difference.  Certain items, however, I am more than willing to buy generic to save money.  It is important for you to review your grocery list and see what you’re willing to buy generic and what you’re not willing to buy generic.  Though it is usually cheaper to buy generic, I have found certain items not worth the savings.  Pay attention and be willing to experiment.

  1. Convenience vs. Cost & Don’t Forget Gas

As a mom that has two toddlers very close in age, convenience always wins.  If there are enough good deals to make it worth the gas to go to multiple stores, then I make sure to have a list and a plan.  For added convenience, I try to shop without the kiddos, but if that is not an option then I make sure both kiddos are not hungry, I have snacks with me (just in case), and they have already had naps.  Occasionally, it still doesn’t work out, but I definitely get an A for effort!

  1. Organic vs. Non-organic

We shop organic, which is why it is hard to reduce our budget much more than it already is.  If you are also into shopping for organics, I suggest trying your local farmer’s market or self-pick farms to get better deals.  Another place to check out is Costco… they have increased their organic selection stock and the prices are usually pretty great.

  1. Freezer Meals/Crockpot Meals

To save money, we have started making our own freezer meals for those nights when we just don’t want to cook.  I have found that it is cheaper than buying a freezer meal and, in my opinion, it tastes a lot better too!  Crockpot meals fall under this same category.  They are quick and easy and you can find a ton of wonderful recipes out there.  Here are some of my favorite places… go check them out!

  1. Pack Your Lunch and Bring Your Own Snacks

I don’t think this one needs much of an explanation;)!

I hope this article motivates you to start watching your grocery budget!  Just remember, any money saved can be invested in your future or you can have extra money to use for vacations, paying off debt, or whatever you see fit.  If you are looking for a more in-depth look at budgeting, you should check out Rosemarie at the Busy Budgeter.  And if you are looking for more great ways to save, check out Crystal at Money Saving Mom.  Have a happy day!

Wanderlust Crochet Along

Wanderlust Crochet Along – Join Today!

Recently I have really been getting back into the groove of crocheting and have seen a ton of crochet alongs (CAL).  Someone creates a pattern and then releases it in segments for everyone to crochet together.  I absolutely fell in love with this idea because I don’t live near anyone that crochets.  In general, I crochet by myself and even when I share my projects with others, I can’t really share the details of how I created it or what was difficult, because they have no idea what I am talking about.  So, I’ve decided its time I jump on this bandwagon of CALers and create my own pattern to share!  Enter the Wanderlust Crochet Along!

Wanderlust… such a wonderful word!  I love the meaning and I love that it makes my heart happy.  Since I am in the amazing PNW and our family loves the outdoors and all it offers, I decided to base my Wanderlust CAL off of my surroundings.  The great thing about the Wanderlust CAL is that you have plenty of opportunity to personalize it or make it your own.  You can decide to do each release and have a large blanket to snuggle under or you can just do some of the releases and make a lap blanket, baby blanket, or pillows!  You can also personalize each release with whatever colors suit your style… really, the possibilities are endless with this CAL.

Now let’s get down to the details!

What you will need

  • Yarn clips – I highly recommend using these
  • Scissors
  • Yarning Needle
  • Crochet Hook: G or H
  • Yarn – Medium weight (size 4) yarn
    • I am using Red Heart Super Saver, but feel free to use whatever yarn brand you prefer, so long as the yarn weight is the same.  Feel free to mix types of yarn as well… the possibilities are endless.  I have a heard a lot of good things about I Love This Yarn at Hobby Lobby, so you may want to consider this brand as well.

Stitch Options

  • Bobble – If you are not familiar with this stitch, please check out Ashleigh at Sewrella.  She has a great tutorial on it.
  • C2C – Sarah at Repeat Crafter Me is the queen of C2C graphgans!  Here is a detailed tutorial on the C2C technique.

Need to Know How to Color Change

  • Bobble Stich – Sarah at Repeat Crafter Me has an awesome tutorial (with video) on color change for the bobble stitch.  Definitely worth reviewing before starting the Wanderlust CAL.
  • C2C & Mini C2C – Jess at Make and Do Crew has a detailed post on how to color change in C2C, which is definitely worth checking out if you are not familiar with it.

Releases

I will release on Friday mornings in hopes of giving you the weekend to supply shop and get a head start on that week’s release.  I will also provide the colors I have selected for that week’s release, but feel free to use your own for your square.

Square Size

Size will vary depending on the hook size you select and the type of stitch you decide to use.  I will be using the bobble stitch and size H hook.  As we get started we can each share how large our squares are based on the hook size and type of stitch we each chose to use.

Bonus & Alternate Releases

Some weeks I will provide bonus squares and other weeks I will provide alternate squares.  There will also be a header and footer release.  Feel free to do them all or only do the ones you like.  This is the beauty of this Wanderlust CAL, you can make it your own.

Facebook

I will have a private Facebook group for everyone that would like to participate in the Wanderlust CAL.  My hope is that the Facebook group will allow us to share our creativity with yarn choices as well as with the type of stitch we decide to use.  It will also act as an avenue to ask questions if we run into issues.

Official Start Date

The first release will be on Friday, September 29th.

Wanderlust CAL Schedule

I will release each pattern on Fridays.  My goal for the Wanderlust CAL is to have the last release be on Friday, December 8th.  This way if you would like to give it as a gift you have time to finish the last square, block, and sew it together, with just enough time to wrap and put under the Christmas tree.
