Welcome to Dreams and Caffeine!

Hello and welcome to Dreams and Caffeine – a blog inspired by motherhood and the journey along the way, and fueled by a bit of caffeine (well, at least when I’m not pregnant!).  Dreams and Caffeine is a blog about all things connected to motherhood, parenting, education, crocheting, knitting, crafts, holiday preparation (I’m obsessed with all holidays), organization, product reviews, and cooking (though I use that term loosely).  My goal is to post at least once a week.

At this point you are probably wondering who I am.  My name is Lisa and I am the wife to a superhero husband and mother to an adorable 1 ½ year old daughter and soon to be son (currently named Baby Boy… since the name battle has not been won by either party).  He is scheduled to arrive early next year and we can’t wait.  Before receiving the title of stay at home wife and mother, our lives were quite different.  I received my Bachelors of Science in Psychology and followed that with my Masters of Arts in teaching.  I ran a nonprofit child development center that accommodated children ranging from infants to fifth graders.  To say the least, I had a very full schedule.

When my husband and I decided it was a good time to start a family, I thought that our lives couldn’t be on a better schedule – I could work full time, collect a paycheck, and our future baby could go to work with me.  Talk about the best of both worlds!  Oh how our future took a few unexpected turns.  Starting a family ended up being a longer and different process than we had expected, but that’s a story for a different post.  We were finally pregnant with our precious little girl when she decided to arrive several weeks early… so our lives got even crazier.  I took four full months of maternity leave and then went back part time with the goal of working my way back to full time.  The irony in all of this was that prior to becoming pregnant, I remember being asked a zillion times if I was going to quit and stay at home to raise our baby.  I always had a canned answer to give anyone who might ask, but in my head my response went more like… Are you crazy?!?!  I’m definitely going back to work – I love what I do!  Plus, my daughter gets to go with me!  Keep in mind this response was prior to holding my amazing, adorably sweet daughter.  All reasoning, income considerations, and love of my job went straight out the window once I held her in my arms.

Despite that, it was time to go back to work, and I was devastated.  Both my husband and I thought it would be too tight financially for me to stay at home.   Crazily, we decided to add another child to the mix.  I know many people might think we’re insane for wanting a second child so soon, but we felt it was a good decision for our family.  We would practice living without my paycheck when I first went back to work by putting my paycheck into savings to see if we could handle budgeting with just his income.  However, we never made it that far.  Unfortunately, the development center was facing a potential shutdown and another facility offered me a job with a flexible schedule. Our daughter was able to once again come with me and I could work less than full time.  I was very excited, but to my dismay, that center wasn’t able to continue operating shortly thereafter.

So here we are, present day, venturing into the unknown.  Okay, that might be a little dramatic, but I couldn’t resist!!!  Basically, I’m six months pregnant with a toddler at home, unemployed, and my husband asked what I wanted to do.  My immediate response was that I needed to find a job.  He looked a little shocked and said (in his matter-of-fact way like it was obvious) why don’t you stay at home and do what you love?  Very confused I looked at him blankly needing MUCH MORE explanation.  He suggested I stay home with our daughter, open that Etsy shop I’ve always talked about but never had the time for, and start a blog about everything I love and want to share with others.  I was just speechless!   Can you see why I call him my superhero husband?

So I decided to go for it!  Life’s short and I don’t want to have regrets 🙂 … so my adventure starts now as a blogger and Etsy shop owner.  Please feel free to leave a comment below or email me directly if you have anything you’d like to share with me.  Stop by often, make yourself at home, and most of all, enjoy the site!
